Pippa Thomas (b. 1990 Isle of Man), is a visual artist living and working in Glasgow.
Through her practice Pippa explores healing, protection, ecology, women’s experience and place. Using drawing, writing, research and material exploration she works to unravel histories and build dreamlike images that aid in understanding the experience of placelessness, whilst furthering her interest in ecology and reverence of nature. Finding parallels between her experience as a woman and the treatment of nature at the hands of capitalist systems, she generates pieces drawn from imagination and memories of ancient oak rainforests and of her maternal ancestry.
Material research and experimentation is a key aspect of Pippa’s practice. Using food, manufacturing and paper waste, she explores the concepts of domesticity, mending and consumption, whilst accepting the ephemerality that comes with generating works from pre-used matter.
Through a rich collaborative research practice with artists and scientists Pippa works to challenge extractive capitalist ideologies towards both women and nature respectively.
Looking to understand how art can inspire, educate and shape
our views and relationship to ecology and each other.
